Citigroup Inaugural “Global Community Day” on November 18, 2006. Mobilizes over 30,000 Volunteers on more than 800 Projects across 100 Countries

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India , 2006-11-16

Over 1,500 Citigroup India employees spread across 35 towns and cities will actively participate as volunteers in various community initiatives on Saturday, November 18. The employee volunteers will be personally involved in over 40 projects addressing a variety of community development initiatives- education, housing, environment protection, child welfare, disaster relief and healthcare among others.

To maximize volunteering opportunity, Citigroup has partnered with leading NGOs in each geographic location and planned a broad spectrum of activities to contribute volunteers’ time, skill, energy and enthusiasm. Each volunteer team, an eclectic mix of employees drawn from different Citigroup businesses, across diverse hierarchies and age groups, will accomplish a clearly defined set of tasks assigned to each team.

This employee volunteer project is part of Citigroup’s first “Global Community Day,” a worldwide effort involving more than 30,000 volunteers, along with family and friends, participating in over 700 projects in 100 countries. Recognizing that many Citigroup employees already volunteer year-round in their communities, Global Community Day celebrates Citigroup’s volunteer spirit on this particular date around the globe.

"With more than 300,000 employees working in 100 countries, Citigroup is committed to mobilizing the enthusiasm and talents of our employees for community service,” said Charles Prince, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup. “Citigroup’s Global Community Day is a company-wide effort, with thousands of volunteers working in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. This initiative certainly highlights the power and diversity of Citigroup’s employees and the strength of our global franchise,” said Prince.

For Citigroup, which has been in India for over 100 years, corporate social responsibility (CSR) extends much beyond “cheque book philanthropy” to make a real, tangible difference to the society. Citigroup’s CSR initiatives are a culmination of a clear-cut, well thought out strategy, which aims at sustainable development by changing the lives of those it touches.

”This Global Community Day is another initiative towards our commitment of making a difference to the communities in which we do business. At Citigroup we foster volunteerism by encouraging employees to actively engage in community initiatives of their own choice and those supported by Citigroup”, said Sanjay Nayar, CEO, Citigroup India and Area Head- India, Bangladesh, Nepal & Sri Lanka.

“We have received an overwhelming response from employees across the country for this Global Community Day initiative. We are delighted that Citigroup and its employees acknowledge their responsibility to the community and are keen to maximise on this opportunity to make a real, meaningful difference“, said Mr. P S Jayakumar, Country Business Manager, Global Consumer Group, Citigroup India

Citigroup employees volunteer year-round in the communities in which they live and work. “Global Community Day” is a new initiative to have Citigroup’s employees, along with their families and friends, come together as a global team on a single day each year. Volunteer teams will be working on hundreds of local projects addressing specific community needs, including literacy, housing, environmental protection, nutrition, health care and disaster relief. Citigroup expects more than 30,000 volunteers to participate in over 800 projects in 400 cities across 100 countries.
