TiEcon Delhi 2006: Entrepreneurship – the DNA of Growth

New Delhi, Delhi, India , 2006-11-22

Entrepreneurs and business leaders from across the country met once again in Delhi for the seventh annual TiEcon India 2006. TiEcon Delhi 2006, the annual flagship event of The Indus Entrepreneurs, New Delhi chapter, took place at ITC Hotel Maurya Sheraton & Towers from October 26-28. Focused on inspiring and educating entrepreneurs as well as debating aspects that influence the entrepreneurial environment and the opportunities in the Indian market, TiEcon is one of Asia’s largest conventions for entrepreneurs. The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Entrepreneurship – The DNA of Growth’.

The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a global not-for-profit organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship. TiE helps budding entrepreneurs by way of advice, guidance and assistance from successful & experienced entrepreneurs and professionals.

The partner state for TiEcon Delhi 2006 was Orissa, represented by its chief minister Navin Patnaik, who attended the valedictory session. On the other hand the overseas partner for TiEcon Delhi 2006 was the Government of the State of Victoria in Australia. They outlined the opportunities available to Indian entrepreneurs to come and invest in their state.

Speaking about the conference, Mr. Saurabh Srivastava, President, TiE Delhi, said, “TiEcon – our flagship event, hosted annually over the last 6 years is perhaps the most illustrious gathering of entrepreneurs. In many ways, it indeed is the celebration of entrepreneurship.” He added, “We hope to have provided attendees with inspiration, education, inspiration, mentoring, and networking opportunities across the different stages of entrepreneurship”

Present at the conference also were Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman, United Breweries Group and Sr Michael Arthur, British High Commissioner for the Valedictory session. One of the sessions featureing Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik demonstrated how TiE now appeals even to institutions such as Bollywood. They shared their perspective on how Bollywood is increasingly becoming corporatised and more professional. They have jointly set up a film production company and they implored investors to discard their biases towards Bollywood.

With over 200 networking and mentoring sessions and lots of corridor meetings the event proved to be an excellent meeting ground for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, investors, industry leaders etc. Besides the main conference sessions, the agenda also included networking sessions, interest specific networking corners and sessions, assisted introductions and meetings, mentoring clinics, company showcases, not to forget cocktails and dinners.

The organizers of TiEcon also went on share the results of a quick survey that they had conducted amongst the VCs/investors about their perspective of the prevailing investment climate in India. The results indicated that the most popular investment segments in India at present are in the internet/mobile areas followed by the retail sector.

The conference had separate sessions focusing on different phases in the life cycle of a startup - starting up, scaling up, realizing value and exit strategies. I found this format very well structured.

Day 1 of TiEcon featured a workshop cum mentoring session for selected startups for those people who are actively seeking funding, this was a great opportunity to get help from VCs, experienced entrepreneurs etc. This special workshop was in association with Deloitte & Touche. It covered various aspects of how to develop an effective business plan for funding. It also had real case studies of successful entrepreneurs along with the VC's who funded them.

Featuring some of the most celebrated names in the entrepreneurial world associated with entrepreneurial excellence like Pramod Bhasin, Karthik KS, Deep Kalra, Bobby Bedi and many more TiEcon Delhi 2006 addressed the challenges and opportunities in specific sectors like products and services, BPO/KPO, Education and Training, Digital and Mobile Entertainment and Travel, Tourism and Lifestyle.
