The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt. Amarinder Singh has laid the foundation stone of India’s first ever Fashion Technology Park at the site in Sector 90, Mohali. A first of its kind, state-of-the-art fashion hub, the Fashion Technology Park (FTP) is India's response to the rapidly expanding global fashion market.

Those present at the occasion included among others, Mr Surinder Singla, Hon’ble Minister of Finance and Planning, Government of Punjab; Mr Pratap Singh Bajwa, Hon’ble minister of PWD, B&R; and Cultural Affairs, Government Of Punjab; Mr Bir Devinder Singh, MLA Kharar; Mr S C Agarwal, Principal Secretary-Industries & Commerce, Government Of Punjab; and Mr K R Lakhanpal, Chief Secretary, Government Of Punjab.

Another highlight of the occasion was exhibition of sterling work done by some of the women self help groups of Punjab. They were later awarded certificates for their exemplary work and craftsmanship. Recognizing the role of FTP, they lauded its efforts towards providing them market access, employment and business for their skill sets.

Speaking at occasion Mr J S Kochar, CEO, FTP said, “The FTP is developing three vital nodes of the value chain, namely design, production and marketing. Efforts are focused at facilitating interactions and interventions of national and international designers, manufacturers, both small and medium enterprises as well as at grass root levels. Immense talent available within our country is still largely hidden. FTP is committed to bring it to the fore internationally.”

Some of the recent initiatives at the FTP are:

-- Empowerment of the self help groups of rural women of Punjab by organising, centralizing and integrating the Phulkari skill set at the grass root level. The initiative targets to provide and sustain the work and employment of the rural Punjabi women practicing the art.

-- Establishing back-end manufacturing support in Ludhiana along with the knitwear and shawl manufacturers club.

-- Knowledge sharing and conversion initiatives with SEWA and TeNet. This involves developing ‘Training the Trainer’ programmes in crafts at grass root levels and IT enabled on-line craft education services respectively.

The Fashion Technology Park, envisaged as an integrated industrial, commercial and intellectual infrastructure development with an investment of around Rs. 260 crores is spread over 14 acres with a total construction of 11.5 lac sq. ft. The Fashion Technology Park is fully approved by the Government of Punjab under the mega project scheme by Hon’ble Chief Minister, Punjab.

The unique selling proposition of the Park is the presence of dedicated BPO units for international fashion designers. The development of the Park is planned as an integrated mix of commercial, industrial, knowledge and residential units.

The “Business School of Fashion,” which is a part of Fashion Technology Park, is envisaged as the Knowledge Centre, dealing with product development, design nurturing and orientation, design forecast and trends, research as well as gathering the information on related aspects of the fashion industry. The project has the potential of engineering a low-cost economic revolution in the northern region, complementing the entrepreneurial skills of Punjab.

The Fashion Technology Park is promoted by M/s Chandigarh Overseas Pvt. Ltd., a Greenfield Ventures Group Company. This professionally managed group based in Chandigarh enjoys wide recognition as reputed builders and developers.
