These are just some of the changes Maruti has introduced in its multi-utility vehicle, the Omni. Still, adjectives such as "smart", "stylish" and "exciting" evade it. Not that this has ever been the aim. The Omni is a classic example of a mass product - it is affordable (Rs 2.29 lakh, ex-show room, Delhi), value-for-money and versatile. By the end of 2004, the total number of Omnis sold since launch (in 1984) stood at 8.8 lakh. By end 2006, the company projects, the Omni will be able to stake a claim few other cars can: crossing the 1-million mark in sales. (Sales of Omni had declined in 2002-03 due to rumours of Maruti phasing it out.)

# Auto journalist Mayur Shah attributes the success of the Omni to its "sheer practicality". Some of the car�s advantages are space, manoeuvrability and, as in the case of any other Maruti model, excellent after-sales service. It is popular among fleet car operators as there is no excise on it and compressed natural gas (CNG) ensures low running cost," he says.
