he BBC is to spend �62 million on restructuring after announcing plans to cut 3,780 jobs to save costs. The corporation announced the job cuts last year after setting a target of �355 million in cost savings within the next three years. The plans led to a one-day strike at the BBC, although further action was called off after managers promised to delay the sale of BBC Resources, which would have meant even more job losses.
The one-off restructuring charge - to be revealed in the BBC�s annual report - is expected to lead to annual savings of �105 million this year. Overall losses at the corporation have amounted to �188 million last year, down from �250 million in 2003. The BBC is understood to have spent �2.47 billion on programming last year, �100 million more than the year before, partly due to the cost of broadcasting the Olympics. The corporation is expected to benefit hugely from London winning the 2012 games.... more
