EE Telefilms calls itself India�s largest "vertically integrated media and entertainment company". And not without reason. Besides having a strong presence in the television business, the Subhash Chandra-promoted company has, over the last four years, built up its film production and distribution strengths in a focused manner. Being one of the bigger players in the broadcasting arena, films for ZEE is a logical extension. "We are a large consumer of movies showcased on ZEE Cinema and ZEE TV," explains Ashish Kaul, vice-president, Essel Group.
The company�s first production, Gadar - Ek Prem Katha (featuring Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel), released in 2000, grossed over Rs 100 crore in revenues, making it the biggest hit of the year. Last year, ZEE Telefilms spun off Zee Films as a separate division and roped in Nittin Keni - incidentally the first president of ZEE Telefilms and the first CEO of ZEE Cinema when it was launched in 1995 - as its CEO, signifying its intentions of nurturing the division as money-spinner in the future.
