ut into a sentence, the big picture of the Indian press shows a lot of small companies. And that's how it has been, even after Indian business began to change post the economic opening up of 1991.

Begun as family businesses, India's publishing companies have largely continued to operate as such. Wielding more power than money, they have been generally restricted to small regions. If ambition has been limited, funding has been restricted too. Even as the rest of industry opened up, the Government wouldn't allow foreign investment in Indian publishing until 2002.
