tand-up comic shows are yet to make their mark on Indian television, barring a few, such as Movers and Shakers and Carry on Shekhar (both hosted by Shekhar Suman). But recently a talent search like The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (TGILC) has made efforts to encourage stand-up comedians.
In June 2005, Star One launched TGILC where it invited aspiring comedians to participate in a contest with the winner getting his own show. It was a great hit. The 13-episode challenge which ran from June to September 2005 attained a high TVR of 10.2 in its final episode. "TGILC made people like Sunil Pal, Navin Prabhakar and others household names," says Ajay Vidyasagar, executive vice president, marketing and communications, Star One.... more
