n this chapter I would like to focus on not just newspaper proprietors and editors but also on newspapers themselves. Until the 1980s or so, newspapers were very different animals. If you look at a newspaper from the 1970s, even one say from 1977-78 when a lot was happening on the political scene - it was the post-Emergency period when the Janata government was in power and people were resigning every day and there were corruption scandals, etc.- the newspapers were still very dull and boring and still took the government line.
