Shifting gears

eneral Motors India is launching not one but three cars at one go - the Aveo UV-A, the Chevrolet Aveo and the Optra SRV. While the Aveo UV-A, which is a 1.4 litre premium hatchback, competes against Maruti's Swift and Hyundai's Getz in the compact mid-sized segment, the Chevrolet Aveo is GM's answer to the Ikon, Fiesta, Esteem and the Honda City. The Optra SRV is a contemporary 'sportsback' with a 1.6-litre engine and five doors.

Does the triple launch signify that GM India is shifting gears in its Indian journey? Till now the global automobile major has not been able to make much of a dent with models like the Astra, Corsa, Vectra and Sail evoking only a lukewarm response. Most of these cars were targeted at the Sec A segment. Later on, it did pick up momentum with the Optra and Tavera, sold under the Chevrolet brand name. But GM still did not have a car in India for the premium B segment. ... more
