ar companies world over know that the way ahead lies in finding cleaner and cheaper fuel. While most offer diesel variants, Maruti is trying a different route too. Recently, it announced an LPG variant for its Wagon R model besides a diesel variant for Swift.

The company shrugs aside fears that LPG may be unstable. "LPG is safe, economical and clean," says a company spokesperson. The official adds, "There is a perception that LPG is dangerous because many LPG kits in the market are offered by unauthorised units. Some customers have fitted domestic LPG cylinders (which is subsidised by the government for cooking purposes) instead of the proper commercial LPG kit. These violations have led to mishaps. Where there is no quality control or accountability, mishaps are bound to happen, whatever the technology and fuel. But when a responsible company like Maruti enters this segment, customers will have the assurance of quality control and safety."... more
