The recently appointed business head of Balaji Telefilms' new ad films/non fiction division, started off as one of the behind-the-scenes players for the movie Hero Hiralal, 20 years ago. That, she says, was her "first real experience".

Kalpana began her career in 1988 working as a pre-production assistant to well known ad film directors like Prahlad Kakkar, Sumantro Ghosal, Ram Madhvani, Nomita Roy Ghosh and John Mathew Mathan, among others.
