n September 5, Katie Couric will become the first woman to be the sole anchor on a network newscast. CBS (cbs.com) took Couric away from NBC with a four year, $60-million contract earlier this year. Couric had a long and successful innings as the host of NBC's Today show since 1991. She succeeds Dan Rather at CBS, who was on the job from 1981 to 2005. Critics say that the marketing blitz launched by CBS, is arguably the biggest since David Letterman, host of the popular, Late Show with David Letterman, joined the Eye Network. And what all does the marketing campaign entail? Apart from Couric's whirlwind tour of America addressing press conferences, local cable channels will carry advertisements and her face will adorn the front of many a bus.
The network will soon begin a barrage of ads on rival cable news outlets, including Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. Closer to September, CBS will promote Couric through its network siblings which include CBS outdoor and CBS Radio. As part of that initiative, Couric's face will appear on the front of New York buses for the month of September. And the on-air promotion has already begun. Current evening news anchor Bob Schieffer has been appearing in ads running on CBS to explain the changes and his shift back to Washington. Next up is Couric herself who will appear on air to talk about her news philosophy and her approach to the job. It doesn't end here. The network is also giving Couric a daily blog, which is aimed at engaging viewers even further.
