A matter of formatting

mall is big, even for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The paper has gone in for a redesign and will now be seen in a smaller format. The paper will hit the streets on January 2. The redesign is an indicator of how news will be delivered in the future. It will also help the paper absorb rising newsprint costs, and the new format will help save $18 million annually.

The format is not the thing to change, however. The paper will henceforth use the web for breaking news and reducing straight news reports on paper. The move is in consonance with the journal's strategy to encourage people to use both its print and digital iterations. The journal had discovered that some print readers don't use The Wall Street Journal Online and that some web subscribers don't read the print edition. Other changes in print include expanding letters to the editor, doubling pop-culture coverage and simplifying page jumps in order to help readers finish reading articles easily.... more
