Game for a change

owadays no one likes wasting precious time doing nothing while waiting in a queue, commuting, or taking a coffee break. People would rather slay beasts, conquer kingdoms, apprehend spies, cast spells, or construct a well-planned city. It seems they�re doing just that - playing games on increasingly sophisticated wireless devices. Industry analysts report that 107 million active wireless gamers will generate nearly $5 billion in worldwide service revenue in the next two years.

Those numbers don�t surprise Amit Bose, president, telecom, Tata Teleservices. In fact, his company expects the market to grow well beyond current predictions. "Mobile gaming is emerging as the fastest growing application in the cellular telephony industry. Market research indicates that in India mobile games usage has grown 50 times in a single year. The trends indicate that about 3 lakh to 4 lakh games are downloaded every month mostly by the younger generation and nearly half a million people in the country are mobile gamers," he says. ... more
