Jane of all Trades
Moresha Benjamin

he describes herself as a multi-tasker who gives 100 per cent to every task she undertakes. She comes from a family of artistes, and lives and works as an RJ with Big 92.7 FM in Mumbai.
Her father, Vishwa Mohan Badola, is a well-known theatre personality, her brother Varun Badola acts in serials and singer-actress Rajeshwari Sachdev happens to be her sister-in-law.
Kalindi Badola has more than a decade of experience in the media industry from voiceovers to acting and compering. She has been associated with radio jockeying for quite some time now, since her very first assignment with All India Radio.
Kalindi prefers being behind the scenes. Talking comes naturally to this national level debater and former member of the Election Council of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Any advice for wannabe RJs? "Be a listener more than a talker" is the mantra that she follows - quite the antithesis of her chatty persona. She explains: "Listeners want to listen to music more than the RJ talking continuously. It's fine to talk as long as your voice is not the only thing that the listener gets to hear."
When asked about the video-killed-the-radio syndrome, she says defensively, "People still want some thing to listen to that does not interfere with their lives. Radio is personal, unlike television, which is highly intrusive in its approach."
Kalindi owes her radio career to All India Radio. She has had her harrowing moments - most 'memorably' when fans wrote her letters in blood and also stalked her.
Witty, she doesn't skip a beat when asked about the challenges faced in the field. Kalindi is of the opinion that, each day, one has to renew one's approach to presenting a show.
Making the show interactive, knowing where to draw the line between professional and personal connection and making the show as entertaining as possible are some of the essentials to be kept in mind all the time.
"It takes time, but sooner or later you tend to get the hang of how things work. Once you have your feet firmly on the ground, you can experiment and add your own creative tidbits," she explains.
Skiing, trekking and hanging out with friends top her list when she has free time on her hands, which is not very often.
Just now at a new beginning with BIG 92.7 FM, Kalindi is looking forward with much anticipation to her new job.
