Banking on a Makeover

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.� It took over 30 years for public sector banks in India to realise Charles Darwin�s adage. But having realised that, they are doing things unheard-of. From being unexciting and dowdy, banks such as SBI, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and Canara Bank have been trying to transform themselves in the past few years.

Add private banks such as Bank of Rajasthan, Axis Bank (formerly UTI Bank), Catholic Syrian Bank, J&K; Bank and South Indian Bank, which suddenly became conscious of themselves, and the list becomes quite long. It will probably get longer as more banks get themselves a makeover. Union Bank of India has announced its intention of showing a new face by April - its second makeover in six years.
