Breathing life into a declining market

unge Inc, the $22-billion US company which specialises in agribusiness, is planning to relaunch Dalda after acquiring it from Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) in 2003 along with the latter�s entire edible oil and fats business in India and Nepal. This move can definitely be read as a quick entry strategy in the edible oils market for the company which, till now, had been largely confined to the trading and industrial space in India.

In another interesting move last year, Bunge bought over Prestige Foods, one of India�s leading soyabean producers, smoothening the backward integration of Bunge�s agribusiness in India. It now has an oilseed processing unit, an integrated vegetable oil refinery and packaging facility, and a production capacity of 150 tons per day of refined oil and 100 tons per day of vanaspati. ... more
