When crime pays

rime pays and going by the number of cases lodged with the Economic Offences Wing of the various state police departments, corporate crime possibly pays by the truckload. Business channel CNBC TV18 has launched a new programme, Uncovered, to do just that - uncover backstage wheeling-dealings in corporate India. "Crime is as integral to society as entertainment," says Ajay Chacko, head, marketing, CNBC TV18. "Going by that yardstick, there really isn�t so much crime reporting happening on television as it does in print."

The channel insists that Uncovered is different from the run-of-the-mill crime-based shows on television in that it covers issues related to consumer interest and redressal of their grievances. "For example, we try to educate consumers about counterfeits, assess potential economic loss to organisations and take up the cause of investors (as in the case of some vanishing companies where thousands of investors lost their investment)," adds Chacko. The show aims to raise the level of debate and awareness rather than make hot, sensational stories.
