Honda Scooters and Motorcycles India (HSMI) assumed leadership in the 6.4-lakh units scooter and scooterette market with a 46.2 per cent share (source: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data for April to November 2004). It is a leader in the gearless segment with its Dio and Activa models together selling 2.2 lakh units.
The story is all the more interesting in the 125 -250 cc scooter category where HSMI�s Eterno (geared scooter) sold 69,432 units beating Bajaj Auto (57,354 units) and TVS Motors (16,411 units). HSMI offers "a winning combination that blends the stylish and aggressive form of a motorcycle with the comfort and convenience of a scooter," says an industry watcher. "It also provide ease of operation in start-stop city driving," he adds.
